The book sought to explain in details why some companies achieve their goals and excel while so many others struggle to barely stay afloat. It further states that the discipline of execution often spells the difference between an organization and its competition.
I believe that this book speaks to our most significant need today as a business the necessity of cultivating a culture of getting things done. The opposite of action is lethargy a luxury that we cannot afford. We must not allow ourselves to be caught in the trap of past glories while the present challenges that confront us are left unattended to. As Jack Welch says “Forget the past, love the future”. Let me remind us all again that our relevance to the UACN Group and indeed as a business is only commensurate to the extent of our value addition. We need to identify all inefficiencies surrounding our jobs and tasks and eliminate them with a sense of urgency. I shared these thought with the leadership of our Business Unit and reiterated them at the last general meeting of the HQ staff in Oregun. We have considered it appropriate to communicate this frame of mind to all our people including those of you at the different regions.
If you have a definite job responsibility in MDS then you are in a sense a manager. You are a manager of the company’s time. You are also a custodian of the resources and ethics of our organization. A mismanagement of any of the above will result in enormous waste and loss with far reaching consequences. The key to creation or multiplication of wealth is for every one of us to take ownership of our job functions and operate as if the business is directly ours (and indeed it is). We are all stakeholders in MDS. Its success is our success and we cannot stand aloof as far as growing it is concerned.
In my interaction with the HQ staff and on all my trips to the depots I have observed a general lack of attention to details especially as it relates to the accomplishment of our daily tasks and to issues of cost control. It is also a fact that we have not imbibed the habit of follow-through. These are some of the areas we need to address immediately and gain some quick-wins.
As individuals, let us take stock of our contributions to the goals of the business and to the requirements of our clients. The time to do these things is now. Having gone mid-year let us awake to the realization that we still have targets that are time bound and let us pursue initiatives that will results in greater cost savings and better efficiencies.
Finally, I encourage you all to find and read the book “EXECUTION: The Discipline of Getting Things Done”. This is the time to work and achieve our goals.
